"Resuscitation Unit was appalling."

About: Lister Hospital

My Mother was sent to the resuscitation unit as she had a seizure at home. Upon arrival she had another. Around every 20 minutes she would come around from the diazepam and due to delirium, she would be scared, confused and would flail about ripping out her catheters. With little help my father tried to calm her down however she had no idea who he was, and would fight him. When help came the nurse told us to step away to gather ourselves. When we came back 10 minutes later we found my mother lying on the floor. The nurse obviously didn't get any further help and told us she had fallen out of bed and had hit her head really hard, which made a traumatic time even more distressing. A little while later when my mother had settled for more than an hour we left to try and eat something, an hour later we returned to find my mother unconscious and completely naked with the curtain wide open. She had obviously become distressed again while we were away and ripped her gown off. Seeing my own mother like this was heart-breaking, I felt her dignity had been completely disregarded. We then found out due to the nurse’s negligence my mother needed another CT scan to check whether her fall had caused any damage to her head. This thankfully came back clear which I suppose is also good for the hospital as if otherwise they would have definitely been facing some sort of lawsuit. I completely understand that nurses and doctors are stretched especially in A&E, but their sheer lack of compassion astounded me. No one was telling us what was happening, and we had to wait hours before a doctor spoke to us about her results and what they wanted to do next. Only one nurse re-assured us that he would stay with her and make sure she was ok. This was the only time all day I felt a little better about my mother's care. Later on she was transferred to the AMU Green ward, and everyone there was brilliant. We were updated regularly; the staff were friendly and approachable and my mother was comfortable up until she was able to go home. I cannot praise them or the nurse from A&E enough.

We are very concerned about your mother’s experience in our emergency department and would like to investigate. Whilst our department, as many others across the country, is extremely busy at the moment, clearly your mother’s care was not as it should have been so please contact us with more details by emailing generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and we will make sure it is looked in to. Meanwhile, thank you for your comments about your mother’s care on our acute medical unit and some of our other staff. We are pleased that you were happy with the care she received on our ward and wish her well for the future.
