"Zero surgical aftercare"

About: Rotherham Hospital

Had capsular release surgery - apparently you are meant to have 3 to 5 physiotherapy sessions per week for the first 3 weeks passive stretching - but only if you work for the NHS - all I have had is one assessment and two fairly brief sessions in 3 weeks after surgery - only given 4 exercises to do - none of which are achievable as muscles too tight could have done with the passive stretching or arm feels like it is detached and shoulder blade no longer slides (again could have done with passive stretching). No sign of a shoulder class that has been mentioned by others that have had the same surgery (again they work in the NHS) Staff can't/won't answer simple questions so I have now requested to go elsewhere.

Thank you for contacting us with your concerns in relation to your Physiotherapy management following your capsular release surgery. I am very sorry you have had cause to complain and that the Physiotherapy treatment did not meet your expectations. It is however, difficult to provide full comments regarding your case due to the anonymity provided through ‘your comments’.

Physiotherapy management following capsular release is guided by consultant agreed protocols and post-operative instructions. A treatment program will be determined following an initial assessment which will occur usually within one week of the procedure, this will consist of a combination of a patient led home exercise programme and Physiotherapy.

All patients seen in physiotherapy are treated equally and each patient’s physiotherapy requirements are individually assessed to ensure rehabilitation is tailored specifically to their needs. I am sorry if you feel your treatment was not of the standard you would expect and that staff could not answer your questions about the treatment you were offered.

If you would like a further review of your specific concerns please contact Lucy Smith, Musculoskeletal Clinical lead.
