"By magic my heart returned to normal"

About: NHS Direct NHS Trust Northern General Hospital / Cardiology Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as the patient),

My heart rhythm had happened before three months ago and had sorted itself out without medical intervention. This was different to the first time 15 months earlier when after discussion with NHS Direct, an ambulance with paramedics was sent to collect me from home at 6am and transferred me to hospital. This time the symptoms were the same. My heart was racing at an alarming rate and my pulse a steady 170 per minute. It is not something you are able to sleep through and hope you feel better in the morning. There are no comfortable positions, sitting, standing, lying nothing relieves the anxiety. I called NHS Direct and the advice was my heart rate may revert to normal of its own accord but it may not and only medical intervention will make the situation normal. So I called a taxi and at 3am I arrived at NGH A&E. NHS Direct had informed the admission desk and I was instantly taken by nursing staff to a curtained off trolley. Conductors were put in place and monitoring devices were connected. My blood pressure was low and my heart was still racing. I was given injections of Endesine directly into my blood stream and my heart rate by magic reverted back to normal. My anxiety lifted instantly and very quickly I thought of myself taking up space where others needier could be using.
