"Excellent care at Northern General Hospital"

About: Northern General Hospital / Gastroenterology Thornbury Hospital (Sheffield) Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I had been loosing my appetite and had lost 2 stone in weight in about 2 weeks. I was very concerned and so I went to see a consultant at the Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield. They then referred me to the Northern General Hospital for a lot of tests. I went to the Gastroenterology Unit. I am 87 years old and thought that I must have something very seriously wrong to loose this much weight. I was in for 12 days and had numerous tests, scans, x-rays but thankfully they found nothing wrong. They could not put a name to it. What impressed me the most was that every time I had a test, within one hour the doctors came and gave me the results and said they found nothing. This was so reassuring as I was obviously worried.

I had been retching but not being sick. I also had diarrhoea and hick-ups. There was just some minor damage to my stomach. The medics, doctors and nurses were all excellent. Their bedside manners were also excellent. Even when I had a bowel accident the nurses were still excellent. The only negative experience was the food. I had no appetite but it was not appealing at all. They found nothing wrong with me, so that was great. They could not put a name to what it was.

I had also stayed in the Royal Hallamshire in the summer of 2008. The food then was much better than the Northern General as there was better choice and more appetising. All the staff there were also excellent. I also used the ambulance service to and from the Northern General in May 2009 and they were excellent too.
