"Fracture clinic with severely fractured ankle"

About: St Richard's Hospital

I broke my ankle and had surgery in a different country, I flew home on the Friday a week after surgery and booked the fracture clinic for first thing Monday morning. I waited in the fracture clinic for 1 and a half hours after my appointment time. I had no pain relief, my foot was supposed to be elevated and I had not had my foot plastered. There was no sense of urgency to get me seen. When I was seen I was just a number, my foot was plastered, although the position of my foot was actually incorrect and this has led to intensive physio therapy following the plaster removal. No pain relief was recommended to me although I was in severe pain when I got home. No long term prognosis was given and the consultant was very impersonal. I was told not to weight bear for 3 weeks and when I asked about getting crutches or a wheelchair, the consultant ignored me and the nurses shrugged their shoulders. I was given no advice whatsoever. I am now two months further down the line and I am still unable to walk! I believe there is definitely a missing link, if fracture patients are not admitted to the hospital or referred from A & E. In the past I have always recommended St Richards but I have been very disappointed with the fracture clinic.
