"Incompetence"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

The last time I met the gynaecologist's assistant was last December 2014, but the first time was about two months before. In that occasion a met a lady who was in a rush. She just wrote down my details and what to do without giving me the time to explain the reason I was there and to understand what she was doing. The second time was the worst as I met another assistant who asked me all my details, all over again! Then he went through the blood tests (which his colleague already did the previous time!) and said they were fine... but some of them were not! At that point I asked him why I was there, since they were all fine?! And told him to have a look at the rest of the tests as well. Also my husband's. But he didn't have any other tests: Lost! I was shocked! He wasn't able to say a word. He asked me to go back to the waiting room, that the gynaecologist was going to call me... After a while (every single time I had to wait hours!) the assistant was back and told me to follow him in the same office (which was freezing cold!). I was expecting to see his senior so I asked him where he was? He said he told him to talk to me himself.... He tried to convince me to consider a particular treatment but my husband and I never wanted to do that! Then he went on internet as he wanted to show me the succes rates of the treatment which I new were very low. I told him so! But apparently he didn't know that. When he opened the page and read through it....he didn't know what to say: embarrassed silence. I told him that I refused the treatment he was suggesting and I left. It sounded like he was a market trader. These two different appointments are a sad demonstration of a lack of competence, but also of sensitivity. Apparenlty the main job is prescribing treatments, ticking boxes, without taking into consideration the real needs and feelings of the patients. In the waiting rooms there were several other women who unfortunately had the same experience. We were all upset about this situation but also worried: how can you trust a doctor who loses important documents...who doesn't read correclty the blood test results...who doesn't listen to a patient...who is not sympathetic...who is not professional. I found the whole experience very upsetting. This department is far below standard.

You are clearly very concerned at the quality of consultations you have had with the Trust's gynaecology medical team, which we would like to have followed up so that we can understand what has happened, but also help you if that is possible. All you need do is email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we can continue the conversation and see what can be done to help you both. In the meantime, thank you for taking the time to contact us and let us know your experiences to date - we are very sorry for the upset and frustration caused, but we do hope that you will give us the chance to investigate the important points you have raised about this service.
