"Assessment Unit -admitted New Years Eve 2014"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees

Unfortunately, if you are elderly, unable to care for yourself you will be totally neglected. Left laying in your own faeces, Nephostomy bag bursting. Left with nothing to drink even though was admitted with dyhdration. (Staff were unable to fit a cannula for a drip which was not their fault.) Nurse in charge of my father is totally in the wrong profession. My elderly mother had to keep asking her to empty bag and clean him up. Meanwhile mother went home and had returned within a couple of hours horrified to find him still lying in muck and bag bursting When she approached the nurse again she said she had only sorted him out a few minutes ago which was a totally not true. She gave my mother a pair of gloves and a jug and said there you go do it yourself. Later nurse finally came to clean him up leaving him bare on his bottom half which she informed my father "You will only do it again won't you?" How undignified is that? My father had the radio on this day as in a small room on his own she came in and pushed it towards the wall and said "do you have to have this on?" My mother enquired about a meal for dad which this same nurse said "with it been New Years Day there's not much on. Which we have been informed later is not true they should have been more with it been New Years Day. We got him home the following day (he could not have stayed any longer) after expressing our discust to senior staff who could not have been more helpful after finding out what he had been through. It is such a shame because we know there is good caring nurses out there but a certain few give the nursing staff a bad reputation.

It is very disturbing for us to hear about your father's experience as this is not the standard of care he should have received. We are truly sorry if your father and your family feel let down. We see from your comments you did have the opportunity to talk through your concerns with senior staff, however should you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to get in touch with us by contacting our patient experience team on 01642 624719. We do look at every comment made on NHS Choices and we would like to assure you we will take the necessary action to ensure that, as far as humanly possible, this does not happen again.
