"Referred to Sheffield Children's Hospital"

About: Sheffield Children's Hospital / Respiratory medicine Sheffield PCT / Emergency GP out of hours service

(as a carer),

My daughter was admitted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital following an assessment by the out of hours surgery at the Northern General. The appointment was initially made over the phone and whilst we managed to get an appointment within 45 minutes, we had to wait almost an hour to be seen. With a poorly one year ole, who had missed her tea and had nothing to amuse her, it was a bit tricky and inconvenient. Once seen we were referred to the Children’s Hospital in which we were seen very quickly. They even provided us with nappies (we had come straight from nursery and weren’t prepared for anything). The staff were very friendly and considerate to my daughters needs. Although they were informative about her condition and the tests they would take, having never had an overnight stay in the hospital I felt a bit lost as at the process involved in an overnight stay. (If we could stop over as parents/visiting hours/ where we could get food from, general things like that, maybe a leaflet would be helpful). My daughter had several tests taken, which can only assume the results were ok as we weren’t informed of the outcome. I was also unsure the following day who would be checking my daughters condition and at what time. I felt a bit “left out of the loop” and just sat around waiting, but unsure what I was waiting for. Having said all that, the team of staff that dealt with us were very professional and friendly. We can’t fault the care that we received, but feel more information about how everything worked would have been beneficial; being a first time mum especially.

Thank you for your story.

The GP Collaborative (out of hours GP service) moved to the Northern General Hospital in spring this year (2009). Although there is a television in our nice, new waiting room, there are no toys for children to play with. I understand that waiting for any length of time with small children is challenging at best.

You might appreciate that infection control is very important to us, particularly with flu epidemics on everybody's mind, so there is a balancing act to do. Because of the amount of disinfection required between use of toys, we have chosen not to supply them at this time. However, I shall look into what provision might be made as an alternative.

We have an appointment system that aims not to keep patients waiting, but this obviously comes under pressure at peak times. I am very sorry that you had to wait as long as you did, but am also glad that the right assessment and treatment was provided.
