"My 86 yr old dad left in wheelchair for over 6..."

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

My 86 year old father was taken by ambulance to SM with kidney failure at 12 midday on Friday Jan 2 , he was taken into A&E instead of IAT (as I understand he should have been) and left for over an hour before having bloods, we then waited 3 hours before being seen by a doctor, then after another 1/2 hour we were taken into IAT where again he was left sitting in an uncomfortable wheelchair for yet another 3 hours (now 6 in total). No one asked if he would like a drink (which is a necessity in his health condition) or anything to eat until about 6.30 when a very nice ward assistant enquired and got him a "lunch box". this was after more than 6 hours. (we had of course given him food and water,, just that if he had been alone no one would have noticed). My dad who finds walking difficult did manage to get to the toilet with help from me but again no staff asked or offered him the WC. So many people seemed to be just milling around trying to look busy but not doing anything. Whilst we were waiting a gentleman in a cubical was calling for a doctor for about 30 minutes no one took any notice even after I had said to them he had been calling for 20 minutes, they still left him for another 10 minutes .... Also an elderly lady with Dementure kept wandering off and if I hadn't said to a nurse on several occasions she would have just walked away unnoticed. We just felt as if he was being ignored for the best part, the A&E doctor was good and did pop back to check on him but the others really didn't seem to notice him or seem to care he was there for all that time just sitting in the corner. I know that the department is busy but either more staff or a little more attention to their patients needs wouldn't go a miss. I live in Holland and here you go to your doctor or an out of hours clinic and they refure you if you need to go to hospital so the hospital know you are coming and what to expect. or of course ambulance if you call one. Please please!! get this sorted SM !! the elderly need to be cared for and respected.
