"Gynaecology appt, why?"

I'm not sure what my appt achieved. I was referred here after prolonged pain and an ultrasound scan indicated an 8cm cyst with a solid component. I was hoping to obtain a little more information from the appt with the consultant but it amounted to - 'you have a cyst, do you want to leave it and see if it goes?' (It's over 8cm, I understand it's unlikely to go) 'No? ok, we'll schedule surgery, it'll be around 8 to 12 weeks'. This was followed by a short/abrupt examination and then I left. I was asked if I had any questions but to be honest, the do you want to leave it and see if it goes question just put my head in a spin - it seemed so incongruous with my pain levels and the solid component - all I could think about was bringing an end to the current pain asap. I assume my visit ticked a box somewhere but I still don't know what the solid component is/means and whilst I appreciate its almost certainly just a cyst its frustrating not to be clear. I also don't know which hospital I'll have the surgery at or when/how/if I can choose where. Essentially, for some reason I felt uncomfortable and I therefore didn't ask many of the questions I needed to.

Making sure our patients feel fully informed about all aspects of their diagnosis and treatment is extremely important and so it is very disappointing to hear you feel unclear about your condition following your consultation. Maintaining good levels of two-way communication between patients and clinicians is a priority and patients should always feel comfortable to ask questions about any aspect of their treatment. We must apologise if you felt unable to do this during your appointment. We have spoken to the Clinical Director for this area, Mr Adrian Warwick, and he is concerned that you are unclear about your diagnosis and planned treatment.
