"You were all amazing"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Cardiology & Coronary Care Unit Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

Almost exactly a year ago in January 2014 I was rushed into ERI from East Lothian by ambulance after suffering multiple Cardiac Arrests. Within hours of arriving I had emergency surgery as a stent was fitted and I was moved to the ICU where I remained for the next 15 days in an induced coma until I was gradually awoke.

As I never got the chance at the time I feel the anniversary of my big medical drama is a suitable time to say a massive THANK YOU to all the doctors and nurses who helped me and my family through a very very difficult time.

I cannot express in words adequately how much I appreciate the skill, dedication and care I received. It was only in the months since leaving the hospital that I slowly got to learn just how ill I was and began to realise just what a fantastic job everyone at ERI did for me. This of course includes the staff in the Cardiac Ward where I was subsequently moved to for further recovery.

Today, I am fully recovered and whenever anybody meets me they cannot believe that I went through such a serious ordeal as I look and behave just as I did before.

I truly thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for giving me and my family lots more time together. You were all amazing.

Thank you very much.

Hi Daveso

Happy New Year to you! I was really pleased to read about your experience and delighted that you were able to enjoy this years festivities. As you and your family are no doubt aware, a cardiac arrest is the ultimate medical emergency and it must have been an extremely difficult time for all of you last year. From a Scottish Ambulance Service perspective, we are continously striving to improve how we manage cardiac arrests and have made it one of our clinical priorities for this year. A major part of this is ensuring that we work closely with our other NHS colleagues so that all the 'links in the chain' run smoothly. It is heartening to know that this happened for you. Thank you so much for sharing this story.

Best Wishes

Martin Esposito.

Update posted by Daveso (the patient)

Thank you Martin for your response.

I was extremely lucky that I collapsed unconscious so close to an ambulance base in Haddington as the paramedics were with me in minutes. As you know, time is critical in cases like multiple cardiac arrests.

The prompt attention I received plus the high speed transfer along the A1 to ERI without doubt helped save my life.

It was a very close call though (phew).

Regards
