About: Arrowe Park Hospital

My partner was taken into A & E after falling off a ladder....A & E........ excellent. Then to ward 23....dreadful, the man in the next bed had a urine bag that burst, the contents of which was all over the floor. My partners buzzer was on the floor, the cleaner managed to push the urine around the floor with her mop (which is the greatest thing I have ever seen for holding bacteria) and onto the buzzer, when pointed out to her she picked it up from the floor and placed it on the bed.........no attempt was made to clean the it. The shower-room. First visit the shower was full of empty wrappers and was dirty. The second visit a few days later, when they asked me to take him for a shower for the second time as he had not been offered any assistance to shower, was worse still.....blood everywhere....the tile grouting is filthy - black is now the colour of the grouting, I dont think these tiles have ever been cleaned. Then we have the cleaner who is allowed to dust the higher reaches of the walls during meal times. My partner was in pain during the night and asked the sister the next day, when she was dispensing medication, if he could have some pain relief for the following night in case it happened again. She looked incredulous and almost laughed saying "we dont do that, medication has to be taken when it is dispensed". She made no effort at all to help the situation and in a very dismissive way almost said it was not her problem. Her main concern seemed to be my sitting on the bed, I said I would happily sit on the chair if she could have the stains removed! After two/three days - to ward to 32 what a difference, clean, well run and nurses who actually listened. Cleaners who were aware of what was going on around them and staff nurses/sisters who were there for the patients, unlike ward 23 where the sister was careful to look neither left or right incase she might be unfortunate enough to give eye contact to her patients and, heaven forbid, they might have a query which might necessitate her thinking outside of the box. I find it hard to believe that any chief executive does not know what is going on under his nose and is happy to accept such a deplorable situation which would take very little effort to correct.
