My brother in law died at the R.S.C.H on Easter Sunday a week after having fallen out of bed, breaking his neck and causing a catastrophic bleed to his brain. A nurse had left his bed elevated and the sides down. Surely putting the sides back up on the bed of a patient who is vulnerable to falls is a fairly basic requirement? This is now the subject of an inquest.
I feel that the geriatric care in this hospital is appalling: I have seen patients left dirty for hours, food and fluids out of reach of patients and we were certainly never shown a care plan (if one existed). In fact, I felt as though charge nurses were avoiding my relatives and I.
My mother also died in this hospital in 2008 in agony from a broken back after falling when the cot sides were not replaced.
I would be interested to see this hospitals care and commission reports. I would like to advise that people think carefully about which hospital to go to, you have choices.
