"I've been offered DBT treatment"

About: Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

My new cpn tells me I have a new diagnosis of a personality disorder and the treatment on offer is DBT.

They say I was not making any progress with my previous diagnosis of recurrent anxiety etc, and consultant psych. with mental health nurse care.

Well I really don't want to do DBT, the scale of it- a 6 month group, and no evidence base for anxiety PD as yet. I was making progress with the previous consultant and MH nurse, just that it was gradual, eg far fewer accessing of crisis care. So now it's take up the DBT or be discharged (not even the consultant psych)..

I'm worn out as it is with this condition to answer back. Maybe it's the cuts, who knows.

Thank you Marion. I'm in a neighbouring Trust, run by Navigo, though there is a PALS. I am terribly worried: I don't want to refuse treatment but the DBT is too much for me to cope with or take in (if it was broken up into smaller pieces, one to one, much shorter, then maybe), nor do I want to be discharged, as I am clearly not well, quite vulnerable and need to keep my consultant psych. at the very least (I have medication). I had best care with my previous consultant and MH nurse, Peter (both have moved from the area) I tell the new cpns my head is funny, feel sick etc but they are quite cut and dried about their sudden new diagnosis, anxPD and new DBT therapy, take it or be discharged, I can't decide, I can't think straight, they know that. I am thinking of writing to the CMHT manager, or maybe writing a formal complaint, but I haven't the nerve for it. perhaps best is PALS or my GP. coping with this illness is a daily and weekly struggle, my previous consultant and MH nurse were perfectly suited to me, I made gradual improvement with them and trusted their care and experience highly. there's no need for the change of diagnosis, it's silly, and only DBT or be discharged seems uncaring, callous and very risky either way. Thankyou for letting me write.

thankyou for letting me know about navigo PALS, so far I have seen my GP about it and of course my family. the DBT would be too much for me (group therapy, 6 months). mum says I was a bit better this past year with ups and downs, this was with my previous consultant and cpn peter. after seeing my gp this morning I will ask the cmht if I can see the new consultant by myself, and to come back to him if any trouble getting to see one, or if not coping well, which im not. also to tell the cmht that I really dont feel up to the DBT. I dont want to cause a fuss or argue/ complain. I did send an email to the chmt manager but wish I hadnt, I dont want to come across as bossy or clever. my Gp says maybe they will come up with something than discharge me, which would seem a little unfair. when you are unwell, and I have funny heads, you dont feel up to putting your points across, and nor did I have to with the previous dr pietura and peter smythe. thankyou again
