"MRI Scan"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

I felt after my MRI scan today i should write a review to help others who may need this procedure done. It's actually not as bad as it seems. If the staff member i saw had actually explained the machine to me a bit better, i would have felt a lot better during the scan. The Mri scanner i used was just a big tube, open at both ends and not as daunting as first thought. If you look through the scanner you will see a beach scene on the rear wall. You will be asked to lay on the bed and a shield like mask is placed over your head, presumably to keep the head still during the scan. You will be given a button to press in case you need assistance, this should only be held by the cable as i set it off by mistake not realising. You then get headphones to wear with music and you can also hear the staff members voice. You are then placed in the tube via a moving table. Once inside the tube you will see the beach themed wall by way of a small mirror on top of the head shield. For my head scan i was placed about halfway in the tube. The scans i had were a series of short bursts, noisy but not bad....first one 30 seconds, next 40 seconds etc and even the longest was only 3 minutes. I was dreading the ' 30 minute appointment ' when i first entered the tube as it can feel a bit claustrophobic, but the short bursts were a big relief and it was over pretty quickly. Signs need to be improved. First floor then......the signs stop. I had to ask a member of staff who was unsure themselves but we eventually found it near the x ray dept.

Patients are sent a colour information pamphlet regarding the scans and the scanner with their appointment letter. Prior to going in for the scan, patients are privately interviewed about the safety questionnaire they need to complete and explained about their scan. There is an opportunity for the patient to ask any questions of the radiographer. We have 2 scanners and the other scanner has a woodland scene on the wall. It was good to hear that you didn’t find it too daunting. We haven't heard of patients having a problem locating the dept and the reception desk in the imaging dept is staffed whist the scanner is open, But will look at signage on walls, Thank you for taking the time to place your comments.
