"What a waste of time! Don't bother going."

About: Wharfedale Hospital

My 18 year old daughter scalded her hand last night at work. Having taken the correct action ourselves (immersing in cold water/wrapping in cling film, etc) we decided that we needed professional input. Having checked on the internet that the unit was open until 11pm my husband drove her there for advice and possible treatment. The receptionist was professional and polite and booked my daughter in. A member of staff in blue scrubs (possibly a nurse? possibly a Dr? they didn't introduce themself) appeared and after looking at the clock on the wall and noting that the time was 8.50pm did a sketchy clinical assessment from a distance (through the cling film) and just said "you have to go to Leeds". All it would have taken was for him to assess the scald properly close up and tell us that the scald was beyond the level of being able to be treated by a MIU. Unfortunately, this episode delayed my daughters care by 2 hours. Comments for consideration: 1) If staff don't want to work there or feel that they should leave early why advertise the unit as being open until 11pm 2) the staff member did not introduce themself, did not enquire as to pain levels or discomfort, did not offer a cool pack or any temporary treatment for the onward journey. We are sorry for inconveniencing this member of staff 2 hours before they were due to finish their shift!! I will be forwarding this email to Local Care Direct.
