"Gallbladder removal overnight stay"

About: York Hospital

I was booked in on Monday 15/12/14 for a planned gallbladder removal, was told to arrive to ward 27 at 7.30 and it was extremely busy due to lots of patients all arriving but each nurse I spoke with was very friendly and reassuring and helpful. I met with the anaesthetist who explained what would happen in theatre, had a consultation with a nurse who did my blood pressure etc and measured me for surgical stockings, then I met with the surgeon who went through the consent form and the procedure. It was hoped I would go home same day after surgery as I was to be operated on early morning. I then got dressed for theatre and was accompanied down to theatre by a lovely reassuring nurse. The team in theatre all treated me lovely, very professional but always reassuring. My next memory was coming round in the recovery area, again been constantly checked and spoken too. As I was been moved upto the extended stay unit I started feeling very sick, I was put onto a bed in the ward and a nurse attended to me. Unfortunately I was sick quite a few times so was decided I would be kept in over night till I felt better and well enough to go home. All the nurses, who were extremely busy, responded quickly when any patient called for them, they had to help me sit up and go to the toilet and nothing was too much trouble for them, even in the middle of the night. As I had been sick I was given some wipes to clean myself up and a toothbrush pack to freshen up. Fresh water was brought to me and a few plain biscuits as I'd had nothing to eat. Next morning a breakfast was offered which I just had some toast as still felt a bit queasy. The dr called and said I could be discharged and the nurses arranged to call my husband to collect me and did my final obs and paperwork. I hadn't planned that I would have to of stayed overnight but felt I was treated really well, with dignity and all the staff from porters to the consultant were very professional and caring. I wouldn't have to worry if I had to be admitted to york hospital again (hopefully I won't ) Wishing all the hard working staff a very happy christmas
