"The splint has caused me more pain"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I fell over and landed on my hand. Visited Grantham A&E last weekend. The lady on reception was nice to start off with, but when I asked how long I could be roughly waiting ( Wanted to know if we would need more change for the car park) she then snapped back 5-6 hours. I sat down my friend went to get some change. I was only waiting about 2 hours which was good. Saw a nice Dr who sent me straight for xray. Had xrays done went back waited to the the Dr again, who said it was inconclusive so more xrays were needed. These were done. I was then seen by a nurse who said I was having a cast due to there being a fracture. A different Dr then come in to confirm I needed a cast. The nurse went off. I could hear her talking to her colleagues about me, her colleagues were saying there was nobody in that could do a cast for a scaphoid fracture. So two nurses come back and used plasters to put around my thumb to make some sort of splint. Then used a splint for my arm. This has done nothing but cause me more pain. I was then made a follow up appointment for the Wednesday which I said from the start I couldn't make as I have no way of getting to Grantham. But was told that was it.

Response from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust

Dear inpain78

Thank you. I have spoken to the staff involved including the consultant for the department.

I must apologise for the conversation overheard. The discussion was around the fact that a locum doctor was requesting an out of date treatment. The patient was sat in cubicle two and therefore can over hear discussions in the office. This will be addressed with the new changes to the department.

The treatment given was correct and due to the rigidity of the splints can be uncomfortable especially over broken or suspected broken bones. Again I need to apologise that this was not explained at the time.

The receptionist will be address as a separate issue. I plan to have a staff meeting and ensure they are working to the behaviours of the trust and to level that we all expect within this A&E department again please except my apologies but be assured the attitude at reception will be dealt with.

Regards

Teresa
