Maternity assessment unit - level 2. Overcrowded. One midwife did not ask for confirmation when giving my wife medication. Did not tell her what it is, the dose, or the reason why she was put on it. When we questioned, she said rudely in front of everyone why, and other personal details. The ward then ordered dinner. Heavily pregnant, my wife was expected to eat of her lap. We asked for suitable eating place, and receptionist said "sorry" and quickly walked off. Hot dinner plate on baby's bump is not healthy for mother or baby. No tables with suitable height, instead the dinner was binned leaving us to pay the extortionate vending machine prices. Waiting times for consultant both days we visited was over 4 hours wait each time, leaving us to sit in the waiting room for that time. When my wife got admitted to level 6, we had to wait 5 hours for a bed. On the bed and curtains was hair, and shaven hair. Pink stains on sheets which looked like medication. Though the midwives on level 6 are very friendly and approachable. As worked as an infection control nurse myself I felt anxious. I observed staff not washing cuff links & pulse meter in between patients with the advised clinell wipes. Nor did I see any hand washing in and out of bays on both level 2 & 6. I am very concerned with the standards of care and worried what it may be like when my wife does have to give birth. I am currently documenting everything, then will submit my report to PALS.
