"Clinic 12 - Systematic problems"

About: Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road Campus)

I have been to Clinic 12 (Uveitis) 3 times, having been referred from Moorefields A&E for recurrent episcleritis. Each appointment I have been seen by a different doctor (all very nice and very helpful), and they have often had a slightly different theory as to whether or not my eyes are too dry and as to whether this could be triggering the episcleritis. Seeing a different doctor at every appointment cannot lead to good patient care and wastes time discussing my medical history to a new doctor each time. The structure of junior doctors discussing issues with the lead consultant leads to delays whilst they wait to discuss their patient with the consultant. The patient is also in my experience almost invariably not included in these discussions. On my 3rd visit I requested to listen in to this discussion, it was only when I overheard them discussing my case in the central corridor and went back and asked again to listen in that this request was respected. The consultant then told me that my condition is mild and I should be reassured that it is not damaging my eyes or sight long term and discharged me. His approach was completely insensitive to the fact that I suffer from an extremely painful condition (approx. 4 days of acute pain per month) which I have been suffering from for 14 years. His response also contradicted the previous 2 doctors whom I had seen in the same clinic who led me to believe that we would work on the problem, to understand it and manage it better. If recurrent episcleritis is never associated with any trigger factors, then why have I spent probably nearly 40hrs at Moorefields over the last year waiting for appointment after appointment? I think despite good intentions, my experience highlights significant issues in the way Moorefields treats their patients and manages appointments.

Thank you for letting us know about this. Comments from patients are always helpful in assisting us to improve the care we provide. I will pass your remarks on to the team that manages the uveitis clinic, but the most effective way for us to respond directly to your specific concerns would be for you to email our patient advice and liaison service with your details so that they can investigate more fully. You can contact them on pals@moorfields.nhs.uk.
