About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal Oldham Hospital / Cardiology

(as a relative),

I was on my way to the hospital with my daughter who had a sore foot when I recived a phone call saying my dad had been rushed into hospital after having a heart attack. I diverted to Oldham hospital as I was on my way to Bolton. I took my daughter to the A & E saw the triage nurse and went to see my dad on MAU.

I had such a shock - I expected him to be sat on a cardiac monitor awaiting results of tests but when I saw him he was unconcious and looked awful. As a qualified nurse myself and my dads next of kin, i asked a nurse how my dad was doing and whats happened. The response was - we have told quite a few relatives in great detail, you need to ask them. I was unable to get much from my elderly shocked relatives so I asked to see the nurse, she was on her tea so i went back to A&E to see my 11 year old daughter - she had an x ray and had a broken foot.

The staff on A & E were fantastic - the nurse practitioner arranged for my daughter to be looked after while i flited between the 2 wards. I could not have asked for better treatment and a friendlier manner.

I went back to MAU to my dad who was with his Ex wife. I had a message about his condition and further treatment along with a message not to ask the staff nurse anything else as she had informed enough people of my dads condition.

Well, you had not informed me - his next of kin. I know more than most after working as a staff nurse on MAU for 4 years how busy it can be and how answering phones and talking to relitives can be a drain on your time but if the condition is serious like my dads is (Glasgow Coma Score of 8) then i expect a little compassion.

I dont know if my dad is going to be ok, i dont know much about what tests have shown, I will ask the consultant in the morning who im sure will be less rude than the nursing staff. You would want to know what was going on if it was your dad.
