"A real example of care"

About: University Hospital Ayr / General Medicine

(as a carer),

We are always quick to moan and critisise but I also believe it should work both ways.

My fathers health has been poor for the last few years but he recently went into station 14 at ayr hospital. While he was there he deteriorated and then died.

From my whole family I would like to thank the domestics, auxilliary nurses, staff nurse claire and sister Mcnulty. You all made his last day so special despite it being in hospital.

From moving him to a single room to give us privacy, putting a Christmas tree in his room, to the numerous offers of tea and coffee for the whole family you made it all about my dad and his wishes.

A real example of care. Thank you

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear weenor,

I am so sorry to hear that your father deteriorated and died in Ayr Hospital. It is always a difficult time when someone is so ill but it sounds as if your father and your family got the best of care and I am very pleased that was your experience.

Although death is sad, I will be delighted to pass this to the staff to let them know how well they did and that your Dad’s wishes were met. To provide quality end-of-life care is such an honour and a privilege. Some things in life can be redone if we get it wrong, not so with death, we get one chance to make it the best possible and no-one should underestimate its importance. (Sorry, a past role makes me feel very passionate about this very thing).

I wish you and your family all the best for 2015,

Kind regards,

Eunice
