"ERPC Alexandra Day Care Unit"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

I sadly had an ERPC today after discovering my baby no longer had a heartbeat 10 days ago (surgery delayed to a chest infection). I was absolutely terrified but from the moment my husband and I arrived this morning the staff were excellent in this unit. The receptionist kept not only me, but others well informed about our appointments and when we could be expected to be seen. The young nurse who took my blood pressure and pulse, greeted us with a smile and was very polite, the main nurse oversaw all my treatment on her unit and was full of reassurance that got us through it, the first anaesthetist who asked me the questions in the unit reassured me after listening to me concerns that I would feel and remember nothing, the second anaesthetist just before I went into theatre was fantastic, also listening to my concerns and reassuring me I was in good hands, the gynaecologist who introduced herself to me just before I was put under was polite. I was put under at +- 11:45. I remember absolutely nothing and clearly didn't feel anything, I was really worried about that as I had a previous traumatic time in my life I was worried would subconsciously affect me, but it didn't. I woke up about an hour later surgery well and truly over with a nurse gently encouraging me to wake up. No complications (although I am sure they would've managed them had it occurred). I was then taken back down to my anxious husband, who was relieved to see I was ok. The nurse again, I believe, was ready to take charge of my care, encouraging me to eat something and drink something so I could take two painkillers, about half hour later I was ready to get dressed. I had to go the toilet, where a few blood clots came out, but she said that was normal and would all subside. She went through what I should expect over the next few weeks, made sure I understood everything and when we could start 'trying again'. I was then discharged. I was listened to, dealt with respect and dignity and put at ease. Thank you to all I have mentioned and those I haven't who made the worst day of my life as bearable as possible.

Dear Anonymous, I cannot imagine how difficult your experience must have been, but your positive and detailed description of each point of the journey and mention of each of the healthcare professionals who gave care and reassurance is wonderful to read.
