"Hospital Feedback"

About: Newcastle Dental Hospital

Registered with dental hospital to get some work done my appointment was on a Tues and everything went fantastic the students I saw dentist x ray department everyone really nice but woke up Wednesday morning in discomfort this pain continued and became worse to the point when no pian killers were working ( I had a hole in tooth which required a filling ) after 3 days of discomfort and 4 days of extreme pain I went to dental hospital emergency dept the student was lovely really nice and made me feel relaxed she went through my details looked at tooth then asked for her consultant to have a look they both agreed the tooth would either need root canal treatment or be pulled out but assured me they would clean it out put in a temp filling giving me a few weeks to decide what I wanted to do until my next appointment after each step the consultant would check the students progress I had temp filling and I thought that would be that I would be out of pain til following appointment! I was wrong on the wed and Thurs I was still in severe pain so made an emergency appointment with local dentist he took one look at tooth said it was badly infected the infection had spread and I would loose tooth! Now I can understand a student missing a severe infection that had spread and no amount of cleaning out one tooth would work but for a consultant to miss this too is bad I wasn't offered any antibiotics which I should have had and no work should have been done until the infection had cleared! Although happy with the care I received that day from the student I'm deeply disappointed with the level of care from a senior member of staff!

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your experiences at Newcastle Dental Hospital and thank you for your positive comments about the staff that cared for you. We are sorry to hear that you went on to experience further pain following the removal of the nerve from your tooth. Usually the removal of the nerve is sufficient to resolve the problem until the root filling is undertaken. Following the removal of the tooth nerve there is the potential for further problems to develop but this is not always predictable or preventable. We are sorry if this was not explained to you at the time of your treatment. The clinical staff, when treating patients, will decide if it is appropriate to prescribe antibiotics and often in the case of root canal treatment a prescription is not considered to be appropriate. Unfortunately you went on to develop an infection and it is this which caused the pain you experienced. Your feedback has been passed onto the management team within the Dental Hospital. If you would like us to investigate your concerns in further detail, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Patient Relations Team on 0191 223 1382.
