"Incompetence"

About: York Hospital

Admitted via A&E with strong stomach pain. The doctor there was helpful and pleasant, which was a relief after my experience 2 years previously (sent home in extreme pain barely able to stand). Unfortunately nurses on the general surgery ward treated me like I was an inconvenience to their night. I was admitted around 11pm, given pain relief and seen by a doctor at 4am. Another doctor told me I could eat breakfast; when I asked the nurse I was told that I couldn't. So no food til lunch time. It was then so disgusting that my mum-in-law had to bring me sandwiches up from Costa. After a 2 minute 'consultation' the doctor rushed off without even telling me what was wrong (then plucked a diagnosis out of thin air). The doctor said I could leave if I was able eat and had no further pain. I spent the three and a half hours after lunch repeatedly asking nurses or anyone around if I could leave. Everyone passed me onto someone else who was unavailable. The Sister was lovely when I finally got to speak to them, but my discharge letter had the wrong home address. After a week waiting for a letter for an ultrasound scan, I phoned, only to be told that the ward had cancelled the request for a scan. I had the discharge letter saying I would have an outpatient scan. I had to wait over a week for the letter to come through. Such utter time wasting, nobody doing their job or treating people with respect. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. Get some efficiency. This experience was nothing compared to the nightmare of two years ago. Even after official complaints the hospital failed to take responsibility. I wouldn't wish a stay in York hospital on anyone.
