"Dignity and respect"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

After visiting a physiotherapist I left totally offended by the way in which the physiotherapist spoke to me .His words for gods sake you are only 53 and you need to be more active! However I will be cancelling my appointment .I believe that he has no right what so ever in making personal remarks .He does not know me never mind commenting on my lifestyle.I am actually a nurse in a care home ;I have 2 very active dogs that are walked often I live in Wallsend and before suffering pain often walked to Newcastle and the coastal area .It makes me wonder if he would of spoke like he did if his colleagues had been in the department,I don't think he would. I would recommend that people use centres such as Battlehill and Molineux. This incident has caused me stress and maybe just live with the pain. I do not expect to come out of a hospital feeling worse than I went in. I have had contact through work with other phsiotherapists in the department with a bit more politeness.

Response from North Tyneside General Hospital

Dear Clare, Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. Can I say how very sorry and disappointed I am to hear that you have had such a poor experience. It is never acceptable for any member of staff to speak to a patient in the way that you describe. I absolutely understand how such a comment would offend you. I know that Jonathan Kelly, head of the physiotherapy service in North Tyneside, is taking the matter very seriously indeed. I understand he has already spoken to you and that he is very eager to investigate this with the physiotherapist concerned. I do hope that the feedback following this will result in you feeling able to continue with your care and treatment with the team. If I can help in any other way please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at Annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk Best wishes Annie
