About: John Eastwood Hospice (inpatient)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

John Eastwood Hospice - Long Term Conditions Group

For the past year, I have had multiple ill health issues, feeling very low (as I have always led a very active life and am now virtually housebound). Julie (my Matron) on one of these days suggested it might help if I went to the hospice on a Wednesday for an activities day. I jumped at the idea and duly arrived on my given date with some trepidasion. I needn't have worried, the warmth and care I received was superb.

Volunteers always on hand and always cheerful. Plenty of drinks, chats and activities. John (the social activities co-ordinator) asked if I wanted to paint and I said that I couldn't paint, which was the wrong answer. John's reaction was that everyone can paint. How right he was. I was converted, and with John's perfect teaching and help I have now done several paintings.

I have made several silk scarves, made birthday and xmas cards, painted money box pigs and lady bird houses and even baked, which my husband thoroughly enjoyed. Very full and enjoyable days for 10 sessions and it was very sad to say goodbye, especially to John and his team, who have given up their own time to give us our special day and for all the people like me who I have made friends with who I will see at the party. As an ex nurse I wish these places had been available for my patients. It has been very special to me and has made me feel a lot better.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us,

The Wednesday sessions are all about showing people what they can do, despite illness. I am pleased you found your sessions here of benefit and I shall pass on your comments to the team.

Best Wishes Emma
