"Care of elderly father at SGH."

About: Southern General Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My dad who is 80 years young was admitted to ward 11 with urine retention due to an enlarged prostate which has now been identified as cancer. He spent 2 weeks in ward 11, when he went into hospital he was sharp as a tack. His experiences included being left in wet sheets after his catheter leaked for 4 hours despite asking the night time auxiliaries to help him. Refused assistance to move from his bed to an armchair a few feet away which resulted in him falling. He has a bruised foot that no one knows how it happened. The food was so substandard that he has refused to eat any meals. Since coming home, the hospital 'slop' has put him off food. His mental state has been adversely affected by his time within ward 11, that he has made myself promise that he is never re-admitted to the SGH ever again. As a family, our faith in the NHS has been severely dented, we only asked they take care of our dad whilst he received treatment, in the end it seems that even the most basic requirements are beyond them.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Sir

I am so sorry to read your email and hear your account of your fathers experience in Ward 11, Southern General Hospital. You recount several issues of very poor care, any one of which would be considered unacceptable by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, but to hear of a number of these happening to the one patient is distressing. I and my colleagues here at NHSGGC would very much like to find out more about your father's experiences and would be most obliged if you could contact me or Joyce Brown, our Lead Head of Nursing, directly to take this forward. (niall.mcgrogan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk or joyce.brown2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk)

I am really sorry that your faith in the NHS has been undermined. It is both our responsibility and our privilege to care for each and every one of our patients and I would assure you we will do everything that we can to learn from what your family has experienced.

Yours sincerely,

Niall McGrogan
