"Specialist Addictions Unit"

I wish to commend the work done at the Specialist Addictions Unit at Mile End Hospital. Although I can only roughly recall dates, I was seen by different members of multi-disciplinary teams- nurses; support workers and my own psychiatrist, although my consultations with this psychiatrist now occur at Bow & North Poplar CMHT. The reason for this is because my psychiatrist feels because of my own vulnerabilities and susceptibility to further damaging my chances in terms of the possible progression of my own particular addiction!history so this is why I am being seen at the CMHT instead. I have always being treated with dignity and respect by staff. My care is managed very thoroughly and effectively with sincere dedication and commitment from staff involved in my care. My chances in life have improved significantly and I am continually improving significantly in my on-going care. I feel very grateful and fortunate. After many struggles, I have now managed to maintain and remain abstinent from the poly substances I have abused for many years now. I have a complex psychiatric history (dual disorders- Bipolar Affective Disorder; Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder as well as a chronic Immunological disease). The three consultants I see for these illnesses, along with a great deal of help from my partner/carer at home, have patiently and tirelessly directed my care in immensely positive ways. I have not always been an 'easy' patient as I have on more than one occasion engaged in manipulative behaviours; resisted taking on board sensible suggestions etc. I have never missed any of my appointments because I value them and benefit each time in terms of my overall experiences. I have become seriously unwell in my remote and recent past and so have required a great deal of attention and to my immense satisfaction, I have made the kind of developmental improvements I have alluded to already. I have the upmost respect for the gifted NHS professionals treating me and I would urge anyone experiencing acute problems because of their specific substance abuse issues to seek help at the SAU/elsewhere because of the diligent and conscientious ways in which patients are treated. The reception team and medical secretaries are helpful and friendly too. It has been my experience that employees at the SAU are good natured and good humoured and give of themselves in a manner of professionalism that is outstanding, helping patients to evolve in their care. I now function very well in society; feel happy and believe that I am now capable of growing from strength to strength in my recovery from my dual disorders. Life for me and my significant others isn't always easy as there are many potential setbacks and pitfalls in my disorders but I could not be happier with how my overall care is being handled. Much appreciated and valued.
