"Hand sanitisers at borders general hospital"

About: Borders General Hospital

(as the patient),

I am currently a patient at borders general hospital. I am, at the moment an outpatient but will be having surgery in February. I have been so impressed with my treatment so far and all the staff are lovely and helpful.

However on every visit ( totalling 6 so far) I have noticed the hand sanitisers are always empty. Usually I only try 1 or 2, but today between reception and outpatients I tried 7. All were empty. Slightly worrying when it's cough/cold flu and norovirus season. I am not sure if this is the correct forum to raise the issue but as I am having surgery in a few months it would be re assuring to think someone may address this issue.

Dear ‘Lorrai’

Thank you for providing this feedback. Hand hygiene is the single most important measure to help prevent infection so we are concerned about your experience regarding the provision of hand gel. As soon as we received your feedback the Infection Control Team checked all of the hand hygiene dispensers in the Outpatient Department and found that one was faulty and is being replaced and two were empty and have now been refilled.

As a result of your feedback checking the hand gel dispensers are now included in the regular spot checks to ensure they are working properly across the organisation.

Thank you, for your positive feedback about our staff and I wish you all the best for your surgery in February.

Best wishes,

Sam Whiting – Infection Control Manager
