"Pain relief hard to come by"

About: Northern General Hospital

(as the patient),

When admitted through your GP or A&E the wait for pain relief is often delayed due to house officers unable to get to see the patients with workload.

I am difficult to cannulate and often go without fluids for more than five hours at a time, which is a problem with my bladder and I need pain relief. The junior staff on Firth ward 5,6 and 9 often pass me on to more experienced staff which results in time delay. Whilst on the Hunstman ward I feel I was assulted verbally and neglected due to the inexperienced nursing staff I saw, who had no surgical nursing skills and patient communication skills. The nursing staff had no respect for me and I had no consultation when reading notes for pain relief. This has left me with a great fear of being admitted to this ward again!

The consultations with other surgical teams could have been better when I was admitted to A&E. However the surgical consultants were good and I had fast MRI scans etc. Mr Adams team made decisions with all the team.

I would like to thank all the nursing staff on ward firth 9, F6 and F5, especially May on F5 and Amy on F9.
