"Really good fracture clinic, x-ray and CT at LGI"

About: Leeds General Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have an ankle fracture that is not healing after 3 months. My GP referred me over to the fracture team at LGI so that they could manage it (rather than the small local hospital) and they have so far been brilliant.

Once the referral had been with LGI for a week I rang appointments to check that it was being processed. They were very helpful and redirected me to fracture clinic, who said that if my GP practice faxed it to their direct fax they would book me in asap. Sure enough, within an hour they rang me back to arrange an appointment for the Monday clinic (having rung in on the Friday). They couldn't have been more helpful.

The fracture clinic was busy but really well organised with a nice atmosphere. I arrived a little early, and they quickly determined that I'd need an x-ray before my appointment. Orthopaedics x-ray was quick and the staff were lovely.

My appointment was on time (not that I ever mind waiting - but it was a sign of great clinic management as there are so many patients), the doctor listened really well and referred me to the specialist surgeon. The doctor decided that I needed a CT, and amazingly he was able to ask CT to fit me in the same afternoon - if I didn't mind waiting around. This saved me a 4 hour round trip on another day as we live a long way from the hospital. Everybody in CT was excellent too. In the end I only waited an hour before they had a moment to scan me - just incredible, patient-centred flexibility.

I was expecting to hand in my referral for the surgeon to be told that I'd receive an appointment by post in due course, so I was stunned when they booked me in for a clinic just a week later there and then.

I can't think of a single thing that could have been done better. It was my first visit to LGI as a patient and even the sign posting within the hospital was unusually good.

Thank you!
