"I found a lump in my breast after an "all clear""

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Breast surgery

(as the patient),

In December 2008 I went for a mammogram at the Health Centre at Chequer Road. I received the all clear but then in February I found a lump.

I went to my doctor and was fast tracked to the hospital. I had a TNA, ultrasound and another mammogram as the core biopsy indicated breast cancer. What I couldn’t understand is how it was missed the first time and to develop breast cancer in such a short time.

The radiologist came to the hospital on the day I was having my operation to show me the results. He explained how it showed on the first mammogram it was clear but the second mammogram showed the cancer. I was told the lump was on the breast line and the clamp could have pushed it back. I was told they are not 100% and sometimes miss some of the cancer.

I think when women have the mammogram they should be told they are not 100% and to keep checking themselves. I had my operation in early April. Everyone who was involved with my breast care treatment in DRI was absolutely outstanding. The breast care team looked after me and made me feel I was in safe hands.
