"Unhappy with cleanliness at Derriford A&E"

About: Derriford Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I took my 4 month old daughter into Derriford Hospital as she had been vomiting for 2 days and we were concerned about dehydration.

The waiting room in the emergency department was absolutely filthy! There were crisps, empty coffee cups, used tissues and many more things all over the floor.

The lady on reception was very rude and though we explained we were worried about dehydration, it took from 11pm to 2am to get a bottle with some cooled boiled water! We kept asking for it but were told everyone was too busy even though there were 3 doctors just sat around discussing weekend activities and how many press ups they could do.

A 3 hour wait for some water for a dehydrating child is totally unacceptable. The treatment room we were finally taken to was filthy and had 2 dirty, used tissues on the floor. After settling our daughter on the bed we were told we would have to change rooms as a patient in handcuffs was coming in and he needed to be seen before us as he may make a scene!

After a while we were shown to a second room which also had 2 dirty tissues on the floor and paper on the bed where the last patient had been. The doctor moved this, put a fresh one on, then went to examine my daughter withhout washing his hands. I was disgusted.
