"Health anxiety disorder "

About: Inclusion Matters Wirral

(as the patient),

I have just completed CBT to help with the problems I have with health anxiety. This disorder gradually built up over about 20 years and eventually came to a head last year when it took over my life.

I went to my doctor who referred me to a specialist. During the consultation I discovered my problems were related to a mental health disorder rather than a serious physical illness. It was a relief to find other people had the same problems as me and, with help, I could learn to understand how to identify the triggers and work on the anxiety reactions.

I had to wait quite along time, about 4 months, before I started CBT. I was pleased to find the sessions took place locally and once I started I had a regular once a week slot. My therapist made me feel relaxed and comfortable and clearly explained each stage of the CBT process. She provided information explaining this disorder and our sessions brought relief as I discovered my symptoms were all part of having this problem. The work we did during the sessions and also the work I was given to do at home have equipped me with methods I can use to identify and work through anxiety I get related to my health.

My therapist provided the very best of care and she has really helped me in lots of different ways. Her warm approach and attitude helped me to talk about my issues and her feedback gave me the reassurance and understanding I needed.

The service has been excellent although 4 months is a long time to wait to start CBT so this is the only area where I think improvements could be made.
