"Sent home from a & e whilst having a stroke"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

My mother was taken to the a & e department after having issues falling over for several days with no explanation, it was a direct instruction given to me by the EMU unit at the local hospital in Abingdon to call an ambulance and send her there. She was in the a & e unit for a little under 2 hours, and because she didn't fall over whilst she was there and was able to stand up was sent home. When I spoke to the doctor to ask why she wasn't being given a CT scan or any other tests, I was told that nobody was available to do a scan at the weekend and she'd have to come back on Monday. My mother had actually had two strokes over that weekend and several TIA's (hence why she was falling over) and now has permanent problems as a result. She also had a blood clot in her lung that was not discovered. It took the hospital approximately 6 weeks to discover what had happened and she only had further tests as a result of me pushing for them. I cannot believe an a & e department cannot perform a CT scan at the weekend, what if someone had a serious head injury?
