"'Dame' Nicky Parkes - my community matron"

About: NHS Blackburn With Darwen / Community Matron Royal Blackburn Hospital

(as the patient),

Two years ago I weighed 17.5 stone and had COPD. I was consequently in hospital every six weeks. Once I was unconscious on ITU for three weeks. Then Nicky Parkes, the community matron came to see me. She told me I was overweight and not exercising. She tore strips off me and I wanted to throw something at her but I was too fat to reach anything. After she’d been with me nearly three hours, I realised she was just trying to help.

I began to listen and now with her help, and that of my dear wife, I’m now 11 stone 9lbs. I also go to exercise classes every week. I haven’t been in hospital since and I feel so much better.

Every year I send Nicky a bunch of flowers because I am so grateful. It’s been great to have such good care from her and from my professor at Blackburn Royal where I also go.

I would, undoubtedly, be in a cemetary had I not met Nicky and the care and support she has dedicated to me has given me my life back.

May God bless you always Nicky, Thank you.
