"ENT out patient and surgery Parotidectomy"

This is the best hospital experience i have ever had, i was referred to the ENT department with a lump in my neck, following MRI scans it was diagnosed as a benign tumor. I must stress that a Fine Needle Aspiration was attempted but I refused in a panic caused by a phobia to needles. Anybody else would probably be miffed with my behaviour, however my decision was respected and the FNA postponed till the results of the MRI. Following the results i was given two options, sugery or FNA and conservative action. I was able to have a frank discussion with the surgeons as to the potential outcomes of each. during this discussion i felt that the surgeon really did pick up on my individuality in terms of psychological effects and medical need. We agreed that i would probably suffer more psychologically from the conservative approach, knowing the statistics of a benign tumor turning malignant and the knowledge that any more growth would force surgery. Together we reached the decision of surgery. This open and honest conversation helped me make quite a difficult decision and allowed me to arrive to it without bias. The operation itself ran the risk of facial paralysis and at 26 i really had to weigh up health and looks. The surgeons made this a much easier decision than any friend or family member could. The appointments were prompt, as long as i needed in duration and the support staff were there for my every need. The surgery. I was admitted at 7.00am with surgery booked for 8.30am. I went through checks, questions and given my wrist and ankle bands. I spoke about any concerns, my allergies etc. With allergies we conversed on how an allergy may effect my care etc. I changed into my gown and spoke with one of the doctors i was already familiar with about the procedure and what to expect afterward, this somewhat relieved some of the nerves. then i went through to be prepped for surgery, where i had a lovely upbeat conversation with the staff, their main goal was to put me at ease whilst the canula was fitted, that they did. I was wheeled into surgery and next thing i know i am awake in the recovery room. I didnt even know i had been to sleep, it was seamless. My pain was managed excellently and the staff were lovely. the doctor checked my facial functioning before i was taken to a ward. At the ward i was greeted and checked by a lovely team of HCAs and Nurses. Although they were clearly stretched on the nursing front, the nurse there was amazing and made every effort to make sure i was comfy and cared for. this comment only serves to say that for the nursing staff already there, they could do with some relief as the lady had three seperate rooms each with at least 6 patients in which to oversee, its a lot to ask of one person. I must stress though she was amazing and i heard no complaints from anyone, we were all content with the care we received. The incision was much better than i had expected and had lost no facial function at all. best experience!
