"Thanks to Neonatal Unit Wishaw General"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Neo-natal Intensive Care

(as a parent/guardian),

I would like to thank all the neonatal midwifery and medical staff at wishaw general neonatal unit. Those midwives and nurses are working under extreme conditions. Their work load is extensive and they always manage to make you feel at easy when you can see how stressful their jobs are.

I understand that parents are told their baby is fine over the phone but these babies are so very fragile things change in an instant which I have witnessed first hand. So although a baby is fine one day or morning does not mean the baby's condition will be the same in the afternoon and may need antibiotics.

A few of the midwives I came close to in the unit while my baby was there work under exceptional conditions and very rarely thanked and are under appreciated. At the end of the day these girls put up with a lot. Their job is extremely emotional and at the end of the day we fail to forget they have to return to their own family and children.

I witnessed a baby die. The midwives, nurses and medical staff worked in vain to try and revive that baby. Once it was over they had pick themselves and care for the other babies and their families. It was very distressing.

Thank you for taking the time to write. This unit has been in the media recently and your comments will be very encouraging for the team. I can assure you they will see what you have written and it will brighten their day.

Thank you, I hope that your baby is thriving. We really appreciate your feedback. It is a very stressful, but often very rewarding area for staff to work and feedback like yours often makes all the stresses worthwhile.

We are very keen to engage with parents and I have asked Susan Stewart the Head of Midwifery for the unit to consider this with the team on a more formal footing - such as a Parents council.. It is important for us that we hear the positive and negative feedback if we are to continue to improve services for babies/parents and of course staff.

Kindest regards

Rosemary
