"Concerns about care in Glasgow A&E"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Glasgow royal A. E in extreme pain. I waited 8 hours before a doctor examined me. I asked a nurse if she could give me pain relief. She said not without a doctor raising it, so for hours I was in extreme pain. I asked if my husband could be called in to distract me from pain. I was told they were too busy. I was waiting 8 hours in cubical and my husband was outside 8 hours.

When doctor came I found his manners appalling. I asked if he could give me pain relief as I was starting to feel the pain unbearable. He promptly stated, will you let me examine you?

13 hours later I was put up to the admission ward. It was then I saw my husband for the first time in 13 hours! My husband said he frequently asked for updates and he did not receive any. I am really scared of this hospital now. This was my first experience. Hopefully it will be my last.

There seemed to be no care, no manners and no concern. I feel this made me more stressed and anxious. I could have seriously done without this added pressure.

Response from Lorna Gray, Patient Experience, Public Involvement Project Manager, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Dear walters,

I am very concerned to read of your account of your experience at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. NHSGGC is committed to learning from all experiences of poor care, however to do so it is really important that we have as much detail as possible in order to take this forward.

I would therefore ask you to provide me with some more information, particularly the date and approximate time you came to the Accident and Emergency Department so that I can look into this further. You can do that either through this site, or if you would feel more comfortable, by contacting me directly on lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Wishes,
