"Investigations in David Ferrier"

My husband was admitted to David Ferrier Ward at the end of October for investigations. The tests carried out as planned and were thorough and efficient. However the "care" he received was not good. He is suffering from cognitive decline and so is unable to care for himself. One of the health care assistants broke basic catheter care rules and not only detached the catheter needlessly but also allowed it to fall to the floor! I was asked to come early to the hospital to accompany my husband to another hospital for a scan and was then bluntly refused transport by ward staff. I was forced to make my own way there in an area I was totally unfamiliar with. My husband developed sores whilst in there as well as his personal care wasn't given thoroughly enough. A patient recovering from a stroke fell onto the floor and another one was clearly agitated and trying to get out of bed so such a degree that I felt the need to buzz for a nurse myself. Both of these men were directly in front of the nurses station. The consultants are clearly experts in their field but are more like scientists than Dr's. They tend to forget that not only are we not experts and may need things explaining to us, but also that their words affect us deeply and compassion should be part of every Dr's toolkit!! If you are capable of looking after your own needs then it's a good hospital, if you have a family member that isn't but needs treatment there then I would be sure to stay with them! I would also like to add that we visited another department for an extended EEG test and the care he received there was exceptional!!
