"Information held regarding naming next of kin"

About: Gravesham Community Hospital

I just wanted to raise what I consider to be an important point following a visit today the unit. I couldn't fault the way in which I was treated by all of the staff on duty. They were efficient, courteous and responsive. My issue is that when giving my details on reporting to reception I was asked who I wanted to put down as my next of kin. In my case I requested this be my civil partner. I was advised there wasn't such a box on the details form to tick. Civil Partnerships have been around now for over 7 years and I find it hard to believe that the NHS, the largest public service in the UK and one which probably has a very well written equality and diversity statement fails to recognise my relationship status, This may seem a trivial issue but on any discussions about treatment in the event I was unable to give consent or have the capacity to make decisions about my treatment it would be my civil partner and not my family who I would want to make decisions for me. Can an additional simple box for ticking "civil partner" please be added. Thankyou

Hello, Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your visit to the Minor Injury Unit at Gravesham Community Hospital yesterday. We're pleased you found the staff friendly and the service efficient. The receptionist that booked you in on arrival had already mentioned your conversation to the manager of the MIU and this morning a box to record the option of civil partner has been added to the system.
