" I made the right decision to admit I had a problem"

About: Six Degrees IAPT

(as the patient),

In June this year, I awoke for work at 5am and sat at the side of my bed and sobbed uncontrollably. My wife awoke to hear me and she tried to console me. I was at rock bottom and was so anxious about going to work because of the way I was being treated in my workplace.

I was able to make an appointment to see my GP that morning and I told my story. I had been through a rough period in my life over 20 years ago and had attempted to end my life, but had been saved.

I didn't want to suffer in the same way so I asked my GP to refer me to someone that I could talk to without time constraints and help me get through this dark period.

She referred me to a counsellor at Six Degrees social enterprise and I told my story. It was extremely difficult but with the help of Mindfulness exercises and inward reflection I was able to compartmentalise my anxieties.

I have attended numerous sessions and I feel so much better about myself. I believe I made the right decision to admit I had a problem and although I don't look ill and I don't have any physical injuries, I have a mental illness that needs addressing.

I feel so much better for addressing the issues head on and not being ashamed of my illness. It is real and the earlier we reconcile ourselves to the fact the sooner we can be healed.

It is a journey but I have learnt so much about myself and I will be a better person for it.

The care I received through my GP and Six degrees has been fantastic. A big thankyou.
