I have no complaint in the nursing staff of the paediatric department, they work tirelessly both day and night, after my son was admitted Tuesday late pm for an emergency peferoated apendix, the staff had been very professional and caring. Wednesday is where the problem was, as you can imagine , like many departments in this hospital is a very busy one with a day assessment unit and wards, so a lot of people / families to deal with! My son was in a fair amount of pain , as only 12 or so hours earlier had gone through a big op for a 4 year old, he was due pain relief , I could not find the nurse in charge of my son , but was told she was on the drug run, unfortunately it appeared we were on the last of the run, ( I don't have a problem with, somebody has to be last) , the problem is due to the lack of staffing on this day, it appears to me that the nurses on the drug run were having to deal with other things as there appeared to be not many other members of staff! Very frustrating! As far as I can remember observations on my son where not taken for several hours ( 5 or so) but on the night shift this was done frequently! Better staffing level.. Like I said this is not a complaint against the staff on the paediatric department , far from it, quite happy with the treatment received, this is more of a complaint against the management! Defenatley a staffing shortage on Wednesday , as on Thursday the availability of staff was massively improved!
