"heart failure "

About: Northern General Hospital / Cardiology Rotherham Hospital / Accident and emergency Rotherham Hospital / Cardiology Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

Earlier this year I had a heart attack at home and a paramedic was called. He arrived in about 5 minutes. He was fantastic, did all the tests and sent for an ambulance which arrived quickly and I was taken to Rotherham A&E. While waiting to go to a ward I had a cardiac arrest and the crash team were alerted and I had to have two shocks. My life was quite literally saved by this team.

I was taken on to the coronary care ward where the care was fantastic again. I spent 3 weeks getting better and stronger they decided I needed a pacemaker fitted and I was sent to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

The care there was not as good there as they kept having to have meetings about me but could not decide what to do and it took three weeks for them to decide to fit the pacemaker and I was discharged 2 days later. I feel I should also have had a stent fitted as well but they decided it was too dangerous to do it. I felt the way some doctors treated me was undignified.

I was referred to Sarah Briggs Cardiac Nurse in Rotherham when discharged and she has been fantastic and I could not have asked for better care she has sorted out my tablets and changed them all to treat my illness nothing is too much trouble for her.

There is nothing she does not know about the heart and she is so pleasant and friendly if their is anything wrong she will ring straight away.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of the Cardiology services provided by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I am pleased to read about the excellent care you received in Rotherham and from the Emergency Services following your heart attack, and I appreciate what a very worrying and uncertain time this must have been for you.

I note from your comments that after being referred to our services for the fitting of a pacemaker, you are unhappy that a number of meetings had to be held over a number of weeks before this could be done. You also say you felt that you should have had a stent fitted at the time, although you say you were told this would be dangerous. You also say that you were treated by the doctors in an undignified way.

I am sorry that you you have left our services with such a poor impression. If you would like us to review the care you received and address all the points you have raised, we would be more than happy to arrange this. Our Patient Services Team can be contacted on 0114 2712400 or at PST@sth.nhs.uk and they will be able to take the necessary details from you and asisst you further.

Thank you once again, we very much welcome all methods of feedback from our patients in order to continuously improve the quality of our services.

Debbie Fletcher, Patient Experience Coordinator
