I was admitted a year ago with oral cancer and had tumors removed from my mouth and lymph node. Any diagnosis of cancer is a frightening time but I can honestly say the team that looked after me were amazing. The lead consultants have created a team around them that have compassion, understanding, empathy and most of all skill. They could not have looked after me better. They spent time explaining what would happen, they filled me with confidence and the strength to deal with what was coming and I had a wonderful clinical nurse specialist who is my guardian angel and was always there when I needed her. After my operation I spent 3 weeks in Hull Royal and saw a consultant virtually every day which is fantastic. They also always had a registrar and junior doctors available if the consultants were in clinic or theatre. The care from the Max Fax trained nurses was first class. I should also say that the auxillory nurses were brilliant. It was a pity that not all the staff were trained in this specialist care as some nurses on ward 90 did not provide a safe, caring environment and I did raise this issue seperatly to this review. After the operation I had chemo and radioterapy at Castle Hill and the teams there were equally fantastic. From radiographer to receptionist they are all wonderful people. I know from experience that Managers of trusts to not always realise or appreciate the amazing people they have working for them. I hope, in Hull, that they look after their Max Fax team, support their needs in order that they can support us and listen to the consultants as in this team they really do know best. A first class amazing department and I would recommend them to anyone.
