My mother suffered a massive stroke on the 11th October 2014 and died on the 18th October. My sister and I spent most of her last week at her bedside, even staying overnight on a number of occasions. She was taken to the EAD Unit after her initial assessment and after 5 days there was moved to Ward 17 (I think) Mum was 91 and had lived her life to the full up until the stroke. She had remained independent until the 11th. It was so important to us that she kept her dignity and was still important, even though she was unconscious. The staff on both wards were fantastic. Mum's care was professional, but more than that it was provided with such warmth. She was kept comfortable, clean - even combing her hair, cleaning her nails and moisturising her legs. Not only did the staff look after mum, they looked after my sister and I. We were provided with a bed, food, drinks and really warm care. We were kept informed as to mum's treatment by the doctors and nursing staff. We even received a card from the Palliative Care Team after mum's death. In a climate of criticism of the NHS I have to write about our experience - it was second to none. Thank you James Paget University Hospital. A practical way for us to respond is by asking for any donations in lieu of flowers to be given to the EADU Fund.
