My father was recently an inpatient on one of the medical wards. I must say he received very mixed care from the staff. Firstly he required a special bed as per his care plan, which after 24 hours was removed, we were told someone was in greater need than an 88 year old man. Only after repeated requests and being fobbed off and me telling them I'm a nursing sister, did it appear. The care was a bit hit and miss, one day I found he'd not been got out of bed all day and he was lying flat, not good for someone with a chest infection! He went into hospital fully continent but the ward insisted on putting a conveen on him, which has lead to continence issues, prior to his illness he was fully mobile, independent and still driving a car. When we told this to staff, to get them to encourage mobilisation, we were treated as though we were deluded! My biggest bug bear is the insistence in putting all patients in theatre gowns and pad and pants, visiting the ward as seeing all the patients dressed the same reminded me of pictures of Victoria workhouses. These people are all individuals and should be treated as such!
