"Told to see consultant 3 times & they were still a..."

About: Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road Campus)

I was supposed to see the consultant several weeks ago. I was seen by a junior Dr. who said I had to be seen by the consultant. I waited for about an hour and overheard clerks saying the consultant had left the clinic and wasn't coming back. Another hour later I was told the consultant had left and wasn't coming back. Sent a letter saying when consultant returned to clinic my notes were reviewed and I had to be seen by the consultant. An appointment was included which I couldn't make so I made another one. Not wanting to waste another day I called the day before to confirm the consultant would be in clinic and was told definitely yes. Later that day a very kind person called to tell me the consultant wouldn't be in the clinic. At least I was spared a wasted journey. Called with yet another appointment date (3rd attempt). Stupidly I didn't call to confirm the consultant's presence. Appointment time 09:00. No doctors visible in clinic till 09:30. Called by junior doctor at 10:00 and when said I was told to come to see the consultant I was told the consultant was not in the clinic. So I had to leave, yet again, having not been seen by the person who said they had to see me. I don't have another appointment either. The hospital states "Our mission is to be the leading international centre in the care and treatment of eye disorders, driven by excellence in research and education." Shame it doesn't include excellence in patient care.

I'm sorry to hear about this. We are very well aware that we need to improve how we organise our outpatient clinics to ensure that the right mix of professionals is available to see and treat patients - but we clearly still have work to do on this front.
