"Anxiety removed from an uncomfortable time in life"

I had to visit the Rowntree Centre of the hospital with my mother who is experiencing quite rapid short term memory loss. My mother was clearly aware that she was losing her mental faculties but had been trying desperately hard to hide it from everyone, not least her family and she has been in denial with us all in that respect. Eventually we were able to encourage her to come to the hospital after persuading her doctor to refer her for an assessment. It hadn't been easy on the morning of the assessment as my mother had locked herself in her bedroom declaring that she was fine and had no intention of going to a hospital. When we did eventually get her there by emphasising it was nothing more than a memory test, we were greeted by the nurse who conducted the assessment. The assessment process was long and thorough, over two hours and the nurse conducting the assessment was extremely kind and patient and put my mother entirely at her ease. By the end of the assessment my mother was entirely relaxed about the situation regarding her declining mental health and prepared to proceed with any treatment that may be required to help stabilise, if not improve, her condition. While it was not a position any of us as a family necessarily wanted to find ourselves in. The kind and patient treatment meant that what could have been a difficult and unpleasant experience was actually warm and friendly. If the nurse reads this, thank you. We fully appreciated your approach and my mother expressed the sentiment that we all agreed with, you are a very nice lady.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on the service you received, and I am really pleased you had such a positive experience.

I really appreciate the difficulties that you describe for your mother and your family with coming to terms with any memory problems and it is good to hear that this was handled sensitively and adeptly by one of the Memory Service staff.

I will share the feedback with the team and their manager.

Best wishes and many thanks once again.
